On our last day in Hawaii, Linda and I visited Pearl Harbor, which was an awesome experience. Informative, Emotional, Humbling are just a few of the emotions that we experienced. Both our fathers were involved in the war, although in very different circumstances. Linda’s father was actually a sailor so it especially meaningful for her. One of the vessels open to the public is the USS Bowfin, a submarine. You get one of these audio “thingies” for a self-guided tour through the sub. You get to walk right through the entire length of the boat and it is very cool to see the inside of such a submarine – but it is very claustrofobic. Everything is cramped, the bunk beds, the tables in the dining area, the main walk way that runs the length of the sub, just everything. You can’t help but admire and respect the sailors who manned these. The technology is amazing. The number of dials, tubes and gadgets are simply mind boggeling. I imagine that most (if not all) of that is now digital, but it was a real eye opener to see this all. The torpedo launch shafts were also very impressive and much larger than I had imagined. They seemed to take up a disproportionally large amount of space. I guess that was what submarines were built for, a war machine. The shot was obviously taken from the shore, you get on board via that walkway you see here. Highly recommended if you visit Pearl Harbor.
